Dewald Brevis’ Record-Breaking 125 Lifts South Africa to Series-Levelling Win Over Australia in Darwin

Dewald Brevis produced one of the most explosive innings in South Africa’s T20I history, smashing an unbeaten 125 from just 56 balls to guide his team to a thumping 53-run win over Australia in the second T20I at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin. His blistering knock, featuring 12 fours and 8 sixes, not only levelled the three-match series at 1-1 but also brought an end to Australia’s nine-match winning streak in the format.

Early Wobbles Before Brevis Fireworks

Sent in to bat first, South Africa stumbled to 57/3 inside seven overs after losing Ryan Rickelton (14), Aiden Markram (18), and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (10) in quick succession. But the momentum shifted dramatically once Brevis took charge.

The 21-year-old, nicknamed “Baby AB” for his shot-making range, combined with Tristan Stubbs (31 off 22) for a rapid 126-run stand in just 9.3 overs for the fourth wicket. Brevis showcased sheer dominance, particularly against Glenn Maxwell, whom he punished with a sequence of 6, 6, 4, 6 to bring up his fifty.

From there, the young right-hander accelerated even further — reaching his century in just 41 balls, the second-fastest T20I ton for South Africa and the quickest ever against Australia. His unbeaten innings powered South Africa to 218/7, their highest T20I total against the Aussies.

Australia’s Chase Falters

Facing a daunting target, Australia’s reply quickly ran into trouble. Captain Travis Head (5) was cleaned up by Markram in the second over, and Cameron Green (9) departed thanks to a sharp midwicket catch from Nqabayomzi Peter off Kwena Maphaka — a grab that survived a third-umpire review despite a slight fumble.

Mitchell Marsh (24) and Tim David tried to turn the tide, adding 48 runs in quick time. David, in particular, counter-attacked superbly, racing to a 23-ball half-century with four sixes and four fours. However, once he fell to Kagiso Rabada, Australia’s chase lost steam.

From 104/4 in the tenth over, the lower order crumbled as Corbin Bosch (3/20) and Mphaka (3 wickets) ran through the rest, dismissing the hosts for 165.
